I am a mom of two blondies, aged 2 and 4 at the time of writing this page.
They currently aren’t fans of eating many types of vegetables. Or meat. Or anything else that doesn’t come on top of bread, pizza or is somehow connected to yogurt. *sigh*
It’s not like I desperately wanted them to eat broccoli.
I just want them to at least give it more than one chance and who knows, maybe one day grow to enjoy it alongside other foods.
I have an insane number of cookbooks, most of them bought because I wanted to see how other people cook their food and what ingredients go with what. I never understood these things.
And when it came to cooking broccoli from scratch… well… let’s just say I wasn’t too sure how to cook it beyond boiling or steaming it.
After looking through these cookbooks and recipes online, I realised there isn’t anything new anymore. All of them had the same ingredients, the same techniques, just different stories behind every dish.
So I started reading about general cooking, instead of recipes, and I have come across books that talk about flavour, food pairings and how to make food taste good.
And since my kids weren’t always keen to give broccoli a try, I needed to get creative with textures, tastes and leftovers. Lots of leftovers.
Sometimes they would surprise me by eating a broccoli and cheese quesadilla, and that’s when I knew offering diversity and variety as much as possible can help with getting a child to have a good relationship with any food, not just broccoli.
And we always remember those moments, isn’t it?
Because food is always about memories we once shared around a table. And who wouldn’t want more of those?
